“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

The Thing Is

to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it
and everything you’ve held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water
more fit for gills than lungs;
when grief weights you like your own flesh
only more of it, an obesity of grief,
you think, How can a body withstand this?
Then you hold life like a face
between your palms, a plain face,
no charming smile, no violet eyes,
and you say, yes, I will take you
I will love you, again.

There is a kind of love called maintenance
Which stores the WD40 and knows when to use it;
Which checks the insurance, and doesn’t forget
The milkman; which remembers to plant bulbs;
Which answers letters; which knows the way
The money goes; which deals with dentists
And Road Fund Tax and meeting trains,
And postcards to the lonely; which upholds
The permanently rickety elaborate
Structures of living, which is Atlas.
And maintenance is the sensible side of love,
Which knows what time and weather are doing
To my brickwork; insulates my faulty wiring;
Laughs at my dryrotten jokes; remembers
My need for gloss and grouting; which keeps
My suspect edifice upright in air,
As Atlas did the sky.

Through the Storm

When the world feels heavy on your shoulders,
And the weight of the days grows bolder,
Know that I am here, by your side,
A steady hand, a gentle guide.
Through the storm, we'll find our way,
Together we'll face each challenging day.

In the quiet moments when doubt creeps in,
When the light feels dim and hard to win,
Remember the love we've built so strong,
A refuge when everything feels wrong.
I'll be your anchor, holding you tight,
In the darkest night, I'll be your light.

For every tear and every sigh,
There's a promise that won't die.
We'll weave hope from threads of despair,
With each other's strength, we'll repair.
In this journey, you're never alone,
For in my heart, you've found a home.

Take my hand, and feel the grace,
Of love's enduring, warm embrace.
Though the road is tough, and skies are gray,
