Who Am I

I am The Whispering Poet and I make Read Poems Online. I recite poetry. I do this for two fundamental reasons: first, because I can effortlessly step into the shoes of those who feel deeply, and second, because I enjoy helping you feel less alone in a world where so many keep their feelings silent.

The Stage That Changed My Life

My knees were shaking uncontrollably as I climbed the steps to the stage. The auditorium, packed to the brim, seemed like a sea of expectant faces stretching as far as the eye could see. The lights blinded me, and the microphone in front of me felt more like an instrument of torture than a tool to amplify my voice. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes for an instant, and when I opened them again, the words began to flow. It was Teacher's Day, and I, the smallest girl in the entire school, was about to recite a poem in front of hundreds of people.

How had I, the shyest of the shy, come to be standing there, challenging my inner demons on the biggest stage I had seen in my twelve years of life?

It all started a few weeks earlier, on a seemingly normal day in Junior High School...

I was 12 years old and attending Junior High School. I don't remember which class it was when the Spanish teacher, María Blás, came into the classroom asking for the smallest person in the group to accompany her. Everyone agreed that person was me.

Teacher's Day was about to be celebrated, so she asked me to learn a poem to recite at the Junior-Senior High School celebration event. The poem was better suited for a young child, and I still looked far from appearing adolescent, unlike my classmates.

During rehearsals, I had to repeat each phrase after her, with the same intonation and gestures. I memorized it in her style. I showed up at the event and recited the poem, as it should be. And I received — an ovation!

Without fully understanding it at the moment, María Blás had taught me how to recite poetry. Me. The shyest of the shy.

We were David against Goliath, the smallest person in the school against an enormous audience and, in my dreams, the cruelest judge. My knees were shaking, but I managed to face my demons.

That's how my romance with poetry began. I remember spending many afternoons leafing through poetry books to find my own golden nuggets and reciting them to my audience for years, until graduation. Among my favorite poems from that time were "The Final Journey" by Juan Ramón Jiménez, "The Night of the Awnings" by Hérib Campos Cervera, and "The Indian" by Fernán Silva Valdés.

Poetry did a lot for me. It helped me become less shy, have more confidence in myself, feel recognized, and find my place in this world. I accepted my oddness to become authentic.

Many years had to pass before I would make room in my life for this poetic project today. I'm starting Read Poems Online with the same enthusiasm I felt at 12, coming down from the stage and discovering that it's possible to connect with others through the words of the immortals.

My Mission

My mission is to make poetry accessible and meaningful to everyone. I believe that poetry has the power to accompany us through life's varied emotions—solace in moments of sadness, celebration in times of joy—just like music does. Just as a song can echo what we feel or open our eyes to another's experience, poetry reflects our inner worlds and helps us connect with others on a deeper level.

Read Poems Online exists to provide a space where people can find the right words for the right moments, letting poetry be a companion that resonates with the heart and speaks to the soul, through life's ups and downs.

How the Poems Find Their Way Here

The poems shared on Read Poems Online come from a variety of sources, thoughtfully selected and curated to resonate with the emotional experiences of readers. I present a mix of classic poetry that is in the public domain, along with well-known pieces shared under fair use for educational purposes. Additionally, some poems are original works without a specific author credited. These pieces are crafted with care to capture emotions and themes that speak to the heart, and I play a significant role in shaping their final form to ensure they connect deeply with readers.

As this site continues to evolve, I am excited about the possibility of expanding its content and welcoming contributions from readers. The future may hold opportunities for shared voices and new perspectives, allowing this space to grow organically and offer even more meaningful poetry. For now, Read Poems Online remains a sanctuary for those seeking words that resonate—and we'll see where this journey takes us together.
